Leos Janacek Concertino
Gyorgy Ligeti Bagatelles
Francis Poulenc Le bal masque
Richard Wagner Siegfried Idyll
Christie Cook, mezzo soprano
It is with joy and much relish that ACO brings you this concert of intriguing contrasts. Concertino is Janacek's dark, stark, nocturnal mini piano concerto riddled with animal references. Censored by the Soviets for being too 'dangerous' are Transylvanian composer Gyorgy Ligeti's Bagatelles, all reminiscent of Bela Bartok's folkloric works. Poulenc's La Bal Masque is an outrageous 'profane cantata' of dadaist hedonism, performed in the composer's 'cafe instrumentation' and sung by mezzo soprano Christie Cook. The concert concludes with the serenely beautiful “Siegfried Idyll” by Wagner – a birthday gift to his wife Cosima.
(Please note that the Wagner replaces the previously advertised “Living Toys” by Thomas Adès).
