Bay of Plenty Symphonia presents the finals concert of this year’s Rising Stars Concerto and Composition Competitions for secondary level students.

The concert will feature a performance by the orchestra of the winning piece from this year’s Rising Stars Composition Competition, Skylines by Rotorua’s Shamus Baker.  In addition, another six talented young musicians from Bay of Plenty schools will perform a movement from their chosen concerto, accompanied by the orchestra.  The finalists and their chosen pieces are:

  • Rosa Hook (Rotorua):  Wieniawski - Violin Concerto No.2
  • Loredana Kint (Tauranga):  Mozart - Flute Concerto No.2
  • Elliott Lee (Tauranga):  David – Trombone Concertino
  • Mei Hei Luk (Tauranga):  Chopin - Piano Concerto No.1
  • Leo Read (Taneatua):  Bourgeois – Trombone Concerto
  • James Robinson (Tauranga):  Haydn - Trumpet Concerto

Their performances will be judged by a panel of prestigious judges. While the panel deliberates, pianist Soomin Kim, who was the winning Rising Star in 2015, will perform Ravel’s Sonatine for the audience.

Winners will be announced and prizes will be presented by His Worship the Mayor of Tauranga, Greg Brownless.

RISING STARS 2017 is conducted by Justus Rozemond.
