Hackathons are the first and essential step of Techfugees' innovation cycle aimed at building a sustainable and impactful worldwide #tech4refugees ecosystem.
Over two days, participants will work in teams to create solutions to help with the refugee journey and settlement, and work together to build community.
Techfugees Koraunui Stokes Valley is the first hackathon of its kind in New Zealand and will open up opportunities to:
- Create actual solutions to help with the refugee journey and settlement
- Welcome former refugees into the local tech community
- Build community and create a bank of knowledge.
We have purposely located the event in a local region where there are a number of refugee background communities to encourage their attendance.
Our first New Zealand event will connect refugee background and tech communities, and empower attendees with technology, guidance and mentoring. We will start with three core problems which the teams will aim to create solutions for.
At the end of the weekend, the teams will pitch their ideas to a judging panel, with the winners announced and awards presented.
There will be roving mentors to help the participants every step of the way.
We are aiming to have 50 participants working in teams of 4-5 people. Our goal is to attract a diverse group of people from both refugee background and tech communities. Participants don’t need to come from a tech background. The hackathon is a free event and everyone is welcome.
Saturday to Sunday 25-26 May 2019, 9am-5pm both days. Pitches Sunday afternoon from around 4pm.
Leaders from the tech community will mentor teams through the weekend. On Sunday afternoon, teams will pitch their solutions to a Judging Panel of Tech and Community Leaders.
There is no cost to participate and wonderful food and snacks will be available all weekend sponsored by our partners.
Come make a difference, have some fun, learn a lot and help to welcome former refugees to the NZ community.
