WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND

This is a real family musical! The story is set in the 1950s and revolves around the naïve 13 year old Swallow and her siblings, who save some kittens on their way home from church; they go to hide them in their barn but to their surprise they find a man there – they blurt out “Who are you?” His immediate response is “Oh Jesus Christ!” Remembering the sermon from church, they think Jesus’ second coming has arrived!  He begs them not to tell anybody he is there – he is a murderer who has escaped from prison, injured, hungry and desperate.  The children decide to hide him – they feed him on bread and wine because they think that’s all Jesus needs. Meanwhile the whole town is searching for this villain.  The children’s mother is dead and Swallow is struggling with growing up.  She asks “Jesus” to bring back their mother whilst the fugitive learns a thing or two about humanity.

Based on the novel by Mary Hayley Bell and subsequent Richard Attenborough-produced film starring Hayley Mills, Whistle Down the Wind combines Andrew Lloyd Webber’s haunting and beautifully scored love songs and explosive rock music with lyrics by acclaimed rock’n'roll songwriter Jim Steinman.
