Richard Rogers’ and Oscar Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” is arguably the world’s best-loved musical, maintaining a place amongst the most-performed, and most-watched musicals, of the last 50 years. Originally staged on Broadway in 1959, and then in the West End in 1961, the film version (starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer) was first released in 1965. Many of the show’s musical numbers were popular hits at the time, and have become beloved icons of the musical theatre canon, still sung by both auditionees and divas of the Broadway stage alike: “My Favorite Things”; So Long, Farewell”; “Climb Every Mountain”; and “Edelweiss”. So powerfully have these songs been absorbed into the public consciousness that The White House once played “Edelweiss”, for visiting Austrian dignitaries, presuming that it was the national anthem of Austria!

This production of “The Sound of Music” promises to be a contemporary re-imagining of a musical theatre classic.
