A derelict bus stands rusting in an overgrown paddock near Helensville. When Pahi, the sometime resident, encounters two teenagers drawn to the bus by their own sense of homelessness, his tangled worlds of past and present collide. As secrets unravel, and the threat of losing the bus becomes imminent, the three discover a truth: whatever it looks like, home is worth fighting for. Te Waka Huia is a new play inspired by the 1963 Brynderwyn bus crash. It is written as a tribute to those who lost their lives – and those who survived - NZ’s worst road accident.
This event is part of Matariki Festival, 30 June - 22 July, proudly hosted by Auckland Council in partnership with Te Kawerau a Maki. More info and updates on www.matarikifestival.org.nz and Facebook, or pick up a programme from Monday 11 June. #matarikifestival
