Godspell is an amazing rock-musical which has been constantly performed around the world since it first appeared in 1970. One of the most successful musicals ever, Godspell is based on Biblical parables and the last seven days of Christ’s life, as told in the Gospel according to St. Matthew.  These stories and events are retold in music, mime, and comedy in a way which is sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental and often very dramatic. Well-known songs in the show include Prepare Ye, Save the People, and Day by Day.

The show was written by American John Michael Tebelak, with music and song lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Our production will be co-directed by well-regarded local singer Kerry Tattersall, who has previously starred in a UK production of Godspell, and Ian Render, Dean of the Cathedral of Waiapu.

The cast is made up of ten actors who can also sing, all on stage for the entire production. Many of the actors in our production are well known to Hawke’s Bay audiences through their work in other highly-rated shows in the region, and we are also pleased to introduce some new faces to the stage. The cast list includes Lisa Eagles, Rachel Griffiths, Laura Jeffares, Carol Williams, Karen Green, Kerry Tattersall, Ross Corbett, John Graham, Roger Parr and Aaron Percival.  A group of musicians playing many different instruments is also on stage throughout.  The band will be directed by David O’Hanlon, well-known in  Hawke’s Bay for his work as a drummer in many stage productions, and with his own band.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see this world-famous show in a unique venue - the amazing surroundings and acoustic of the beautiful Waiapu Cathedral in Napier. Originally scheduled to be presented in May this year, the production had to be post-poned because of the Covid19 lockdown.  We are thrilled to bring Godspell to the Bay, but can offer only three performances, so book now to avoid disappointment!
