Featuring six of New Zealand’s finest singers and seven of Kiwi jazz’s most internationally respected instrumentalists, the self-titled ALCHEMY album was released in December 2019 to critical acclaim and record-breaking sales. “An absolute A List Who’s Who of Auckland jazz…classic Kiwi pop songs redone beautifully with fantastic jazz arrangements…instantly my Number One album of the year!” exclaimed jazz expert Nick Tipping on National Radio.
Within a week, the Creative New Zealand supported ALCHEMY album had become the biggest-selling, highest-charting independently released Kiwi jazz album of 2019, and in fact of the past decade. And all without a single live performance…but now, for One Night Only ALCHEMY (the band) will perform ALCHEMY the album in its entirety, with all the startling originality, improvisational flair, and world-class musical excellence of the recorded tracks. Plus of course, the sheer excitement of live, leading edge jazz performance.
Influential jazz blogger John Fenton summed the ALCHEMY album up: “Premier jazz singers and instrumentalists with serious fire power deliver something unique…and the more you listen to it, the more you are beguiled…the perfect soundtrack for your Summer.”
New York City based (but Kiwi born) Bass Player Richard Hammond flies into town to join Musical Director/Pianist Kevin Field, Roger Manins on Saxophone, Mike Booth on Trumpet, Ron Samsom and Stephen Thomas on Drums (yes, ALCHEMY has two drummers!), Michael Howell on Guitar, and an extraordinary line-up of vocalists: Caitlin Smith, Chelsea Prastiti, Marjan Nelson, Allana Goldsmith, Lou’ana Whitney, and introducing Rachel Clarke.
National treasure and NZ Music Hall Of Fame singer/songwriter Sharon O’Neill commented on ALCHEMY’s heartfelt tribute to her songs, “Wow, this definitely took me by surprise in the nicest possible way…what a treat! The musicianship is superb!” Join ALCHEMY for One Night Only of sublime jazz in the comfort of the gorgeous Fisher Auditorium, Raye Freedman Arts Centre, Epsom. Limited seating…don’t miss out!
