When the Wind Blows is the tender, tragic comedy about Jim and Hilda Bloggs, a retired couple who have moved to an isolated country cottage in the South East of England. They are a loving, decent, houseproud, working class couple who are very much behind the times. Jim hears on the radio that a pre-emptive strike is to be expected.
With his government leaflets as a guide, he constructs a refuge shelter for them both and gathers together emergency rations.
Jim and Hilda emerge after the bomb to find a devastated post-nuclear holocaust world. Expecting the powers-that-be to rescue them, they wait.
This tale is clever, credible but ultimately heartbreaking.
