It’s not every day that lobster, soufflé, pistachio ices and pears are associated with homoerotic longing and the animalistic nature of sexual desire. But that is the genius of Katherine Mansfield. It’s also the inspiration for Bliss, a multi-sensory gastronomic experience as part of the Still Life/Wild Places exhibition and event series at Katherine Mansfield House & Garden.

Katherine Mansfield House & Garden and The Metropolitan Club invite diners to a unique multi-sensory evening of food and gin cocktails inspired by the short story ‘Bliss’ and artworks in the Still Life/Wild Places exhibition. Welcomed with a specially prepared KM Cocktail, guests will journey from room to room through six unique experiences, reacting to the art in each room, sampling matched canapés and cocktails, and finishing with an appropriate digestif and bug-infused sweets in the Children’s Room. Music and readings from Mansfield’s writing will be threaded through the evening to create an experience like no other.

‘Bliss’ is one of Mansfield’s great short stories. First published in 1918, its protagonist Bertha has recently made the acquaintance of a young, beautiful, and exciting woman, Pearl, who has been invited to a dinner party that Bertha and her husband Harry are hosting. Bertha is excited about her new friendship and the upcoming dinner party, but all is not as it seems, and Bertha is in for a surprise.

Bliss is a totally immersive event encompassing art, literature, gastronomy, and sound in response to Mansfield’s work. Visitors will be rewarded for challenging themselves by gaining a deeper appreciation of Mansfield’s pioneering work and being introduced to similarly pioneering and equally beautiful work created by contemporary women artists.

Ticket includes: canapés and cocktails, live entertainment.
Please note that seating for this event will be at shared tables, this means you may be seated with other people as well as the group you have booked with.
