Founded in 2003, Jade have won a special place in NZ’s music scene, as a group that can cater for both young and old, traditional and modern tastes alike, all with a musical passion that is rarely seen. They have commissioned and premiered many NZ works by composers including David Hamilton, Anthony Ritchie, Chris Adams, Jonathan Besser, Peter Scholes, Ken Young, John Elmsly, Russ Garcia and many more.
The musicians will be available to meet the audience after the concert in New World Theatre Bar of Turner Centre.
Members of the Jade Quartet are professional and very talented musicians:
Miranda Adams-violin is one of New Zealand’s leading performers who is currently Assistant Concertmaster with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO). She was born in Dunedin and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in violin and conducting from Otago University and has performed concertos with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and many Regional NZ orchestras.
Liu Yi Retallick -violin is Associate Concertmaster with APO. Prior to taking up her current post with the APO, Liu-Yi Retallick lived in Malaysia, freelancing with both the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Orchestra on a regular basis.
Robert Ashworth is Principal viola for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. He has been guest-principal viola for the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, as well as assistant-principal for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Edith Salzmann, German cellist is in high demand internationally as a teacher, soloist, and chamber musician. She is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Auckland and the artistic director of the Pettman National Junior Academy and the International Akaroa Music Festival. She has been a member of many major ensembles, including the Tibor Varga Chamber Orchestra, the Corda String Quartet, and the Musikfabrik Duesseldorf. She has recorded for the Stradivarius and Atoll labels and given masterclasses in countries across the globe.
This programme takes us on a journey encompassing three centuries - 18th, 19th and 20th.
