Palm Sunday commemorates Christ’s fateful entry into Jerusalem on a lowly donkey, as cheering bystanders spread palm branches and cloaks on the road in front of him. Many great composers have been captivated by this scene and its aftermath, writing music of both celebration and sorrow, often in the same work. Our pick of this music has been in lockdown for almost a year now, so it’s time to bring it out at last!
Journey to Jerusalem includes such Renaissance masterpieces as Monteverdi’s ‘Adoramus te, Christe’, ‘Hosanna to the son of David’ by both Gibbons and Weelkes, and Victoria’s ‘Pueri Hebraeorum’, as well as later but equally stunning settings by Lotti, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Messiaen, Pablo Casals and Benjamin Britten – sung around a stone labyrinth laid out for Holy Week to create a poignant sense of journey.
