Due to the recent community outbreak of COVID-19 Omicron and the move to a Red Light COVID protection framework across Aotearoa, it is with heavy hearts that we are announcing the cancellation of the February offering of Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival. Having moved this once already, the further postponement of the event is not viable at this time.

We will continue to plan for our festival event later in 2022 and look forward to bringing the full might of our creative abundance in Tūranga-nui-ā-Kiwa and the great Te Tairāwhiti region. Our sincerest aroha goes out to all our artists, crew, suppliers, ticket holders and community who have backed and believed in us since the beginning.

If a place was to speak to you, what message would it give?

Wai-hī-rere across time has always authored its own narration through the vitality HIHĪ and flow of its waters, environment and people. HIHĪ draws inspiration from that authority, giving the message of this place human and instrumental voices.

HIHĪ showcases some of our most remarkable songbirds amidst the exquisite beauty of our natural environment.

Nestled at the base of Ahitītī and surrounded by the beauty of the Waihirere Domain Reserve, HIHĪ combines haka, waiata, opera and showcasing the beauty of te reo Māori.

Featuring renowned singers Deborah Wai Kapohe, Erena Koopu and Rutene Spooner, accompanied by musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, this spectacular and unique opera event showcases the songs of Te Tairāwhiti, well-loved waiata sung in operatic style, kapa haka and favourite opera arias performed in te reo Māori.

Due to unforeseen events Maisey Rika is not able to perform in the confirmed line-up.

This event will be the highlight and is not to be missed.
