Unfortunately, the decision has been made to cancel Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival 2022. This was such a hard decision to make, and everyone involved is incredibly disappointed.

We’ve spoken to Mike and his team from Provincial Insurance Brokers and he has this message for you all. “Our team are devastated that the Harvest Festival is unable to go ahead, but we understand the reasons why.  It’s going to be more important than ever that we support this local event so that it can be an absolute cracker next year”.

      Why we have cancelled?
You may be asking why we have decided to cancel now and why we don’t ‘wait and see’?

With the emergence of Omicron in the community the whole country has moved to the red traffic light setting, restricting events to a maximum of 100 attendees. With so much uncertainty of how long we may remain in this red light setting we simply couldn’t take the risk.

We explored several alternatives including postponements however given that the Harvest Festival marks the start of the busy harvest season we have opted for a straight cancellation. Another key consideration in the decision-making process was the risk to the wineries. Our wineries simply can’t afford to expose staff to the highly transmissible virus and risk leaving valuable crops unharvested.

Some people have also asked us why we haven’t applied for the governments ‘Events Transition Support Payment Scheme’. This scheme was designed to reduce risk for event organisers and allow summer festivals to forge ahead in uncertain times. Unfortunately, Harvest Festival did not meet the criteria of this scheme (qualifying events need to have over 5000 attendees and had to have been actively in the market at the time the scheme was announced).

      So where to from here?
A new 2023 date for Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival presented by Provincial Insurance Brokers will be set and announced by the end of February. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for announcements.

Celebrate the beginning of the 2022 grape harvest season spending a day enjoying some of the best wine, food and entertainment Wairarapa has to offer.

Tickets for the ever-popular Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival are usually snapped up super quick! To meet the huge demand, the committee of wineries have decided to add a second day to the 2022 festival. You now have the choice of purchasing a ticket for either Friday 25 or Saturday 26 February.

The offering on both days will follow the same format, just with a different line up of great bands as the stunning riverside, rural setting once again comes alive with glorious Wairarapa wines, epic sounds, and fabulous local food.

The festival will be held at the beautiful, sheltered riverside setting locally known as ‘The Cliffs' on the banks of the Ruamahunga River at the end of Dakins Road in rural Wairarapa (click here for map). Its remoteness and vineyard setting is part of its appeal while still being close to public transport.

Being 10 minutes from both Masterton and Carterton makes the site easily accessible to local and visitors to the district alike. A regional shuttle service will run to and from the festival site at the beginning and end of the day with an additional service meeting the scheduled Wellington train at the Carterton Railway Station.  Reservations are essential.

Wineries at this years’ event include: Alexia Wines, Big Sky Wines, Borthwick Estate, Butterworth Estate, Cambridge Road Vineyard, Colombo Martinborough, NgaPari, Fairmont Estate, Gladstone Vineyard, Huntress, Johner Estate, Le Gra Winery, Lynfer Estate, Matahiwi Estate, Schubert Wines and Urlar.

For further information on the region or accommodation in the area visit www.wairarapanz.com.

A designated area for self contained motorhomes, adjacent to the Festival site, is available with prior arrangement with organisers. See the website for more information.
