As we re-position ourselves from a far-flung corner of the British Empire to a young Pacific nation with a unique indigenous heritage, it is useful to consider the why, what, when, where and how of the locally designed objects that distinguish us. After beginning with Māori models of making, we will examine the impact of explorers, the extractive industries; the second wave of settlers; early exports; products of protectionism; global exposure through unfettered imports, and finally look at how we position ourselves today’s challenging global environment.
