An update on a broad range of medical issues that may present in the dental practice:
8.30am Registration
9-10.30am Morning session
11-12.30 Middle session
1.30-3pm Afternoon session
3-4pm Afternoon Q&A
4pm Cocktail hour
Morning and Afternoon teas, lunch and cocktail hour included

Topics will include:

Cardiovascular and respiratory problems.
Funny turns (eg blackouts in response to pain, cardiac arrhythmias, pseudo syncope).
The clinical relevance of medications (eg blood pressure lowering drugs, anticoagulants, antidepressants).
How common infections might complicate standard dental treatment.
Endocrine conditions (mainly diabetes) and the mouth.
A general overview of mental health trends and the effect of the pandemic.
Detection and treatment of mental health problems in dentistry.
Eating disorders and the role dental health practitioners can have in their early detection.

Speaker Bios and Photos

Dr David Stoner

Dr David Stoner is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and has worked for more than 25 years in New Zealand as a forensic and general adult psychiatrist. He is currently working in the South Island Eating Disorders Service. He believes passionately that we all have a role to play in the prevention of mental illness.

Dr David Jardine

Dr David Jardine is a General Physician at Christchurch Hospital and has worked full-time in the public system practising cardiology and general medicine for the past 40 years. His research interests include cardiovascular physiology, the autonomic nervous system, syncope, sudden death, and problems with medications.
