Programme
Hubert Parry - I was Glad (1902)
I was Glad was composed for the coronation of King Edward VII and has been sung at coronations since. It remains to be seen if King Charles III will include it in his coronation, as a Parry devotee, it seems likely!
John Rutter - Musica Dei donum (1998)
A choral song with haunting flute solo in praise of the power of music to soothe and uplift.
Bob Chilcott - A Little Jazz Mass (2004)
Jazz influences come to the fore in this upbeat setting of the Latin Missa brevis. The five short movements embrace different jazz styles accompanied by a jazz combo who are encouraged to “join in ad lib” as appropriate.
Karl Jenkins - The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace (1999)
Since its premiere in April 2000 which drew “prolonged shouts of approval from the audience”, The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins has made an amazing impact on all who hear it. Its popularity among choirs, musicians and audiences has grown to make it one of the most significant works of this century.
The work has thirteen movements which appear in an order which reflects the pattern of war – the gathering storm, the battle, the aftermath and subsequent hope for peace and a better future.
