Kanikani Katoa with Hot Potato Band was originally scheduled for February 23, but due to Cyclone Gabrielle had to be postponed. 970 tickets were reserved for the show and anticipation was high. Thanks to the support of the Australian High Commission and the Bay of Islands Whangaroa Community Board, the band still managed to present a live-streamed concert and won a lot of fans in Te Tai Tokerau!
And now we are extremely lucky that the band have agreed to come back for a live show! We would like to invite you for an afternoon of music and dance with one of Australia’s most entertaining festival acts, the Hot Potato Band. The 11 piece brass and percussion ensemble are re-inventive of the traditional New Orleans brass band as a modern day dance machine and visual spectacle for all demographics with a strong sense of pride for their fun-loving, organic, and quirky musical nature.
This show has been inspired by “Kanikani Katoa” events that used to happen in the old Kerikeri Memorial Hall and came out of community engagement works held recently at the Turner Centre, at which a community member remembers being an 8 year old and sprinkling talcum powder on the floor before the dancing started. This is is an event for all the community to bring along your whanau and have an afternoon of dance, music and fun!
To make the show accessible to our community we are trialing a “pay what you can” model, from $5 upwards. Feel free to pay full price for your ticket (Hot Potato Band normally charge around the $35 mark), or just whatever you can. If this is a barrier, please let us know.
We would love to see you at the show with your whanau!
