The Rebel Alliance invites you into 95 year old Inga’s living room in Denmark as she reaches out through space and time to her grandson in New Zealand.
Inga has seen world wars, cold wars, civil wars. In real life and on TV. And when you’re close to 100 you know a thing or two about a thing or two.
Back to Square One? was originally designed to be performed in driveways, parks and cul-de-sacs in the aftermath of the 2020 lockdown. Using only chalk to draw with writer and performer Anders Falstie-Jensen weaves the Norse myth of Ragnarok into a unique story of disasters, family and unexpected connections.
Winner of 'Best of Fest' at the 2022 Nelson Fringe Festival and shortlisted for the 2020 Adam Award for Best New NZ Play, Back to Square One? is based on conversations Anders had with his 95 year old grandmother in Denmark during the first lockdown and interviews he conducted with his neighbours about their experiences of suddenly finding themselves living in a global pandemic.
Back to Square One? premiered in Anders’ driveway in 2020 has gone on to tour Aotearoa New Zealand extensively. It has been performed by 6 different performers in all sorts of settings. Sometimes indoors. Sometimes outdoors. Sometimes for 10 people. Sometimes for 100 people. The numbers do not matter for The Rebel Alliance. The opportunity to gather friends and strangers does.
This performance is part of our Lunchtime Series, a monthly event offering a vibrant mid-day arts experience for audiences of all ages. Kindly supported by Metlifecare Oakridge Villas.
