The Last Five Years is a two-person musical that explores a relationship from two sides—and in two directions. Jamie’s story moves forward from the excitement of their first date to the heartbreak of their breakup. Cathy’s story moves in reverse, beginning with the pain of the end and finishing in the joy of falling in love. Their timelines intersect only once, in the middle, at their wedding. 

At its core, this is a story about emotional misalignment—two people trying to love one another while slowly drifting apart. As Jamie rises into success and temptation, Cathy struggles with stagnation and self-worth. Just as one clings to hope, the other begins to let go. The split-stage design will amplify this disconnection, immersing the audience in each character’s isolated emotional world.
