1000 Tears (60 mins), a major new full-length work by Alexa Wilson, embodies a double meaning of crying and cutting (referring to death by 1000 paper cuts). Framed as a performance art dance and deep feminist critique, the work directly unpacks a contemporary climate that cushions or encourages socially violent and devaluing modes of being. It is a ritualised tearing apart and alchemising of disempowering ideologies and experiences navigating a world defined by friction of soft power (passive aggressive) and raw edge of hard power (violent authoritarianism).

 

Born in the USA, 1000 Tears has been developed and presented across 3 countries over 2 years. 1000 Tears was developed and presented in NYC at Triskelion Arts, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Mothership residency, Last Frontier, and in Berlin at Lake Studios Berlin, and has been developed to full length in Tāmaki Makaurau at Silo Hall. Returning to NZ from being NYC based after presenting her work in NYC, Berlin and Vienna in 2025, Alexa returned to Lakes Studios Berlin residency in July this year. 1000 Tears has been invited to present at The Tank, NYC.
