The Big Screen Symposium is the annual event that puts the filmmakers of Aotearoa New Zealand in one venue for the purpose of debate, discussion, information and inspiration.
The 2016 Big Screen Symposium will take place on 24/25 September with the programme built around the theme ‘Playing With Risk. Speakers and sessions will be announced from mid-August onwards.
The 2015 BSS saw more than 450 delegates attend over 19 sessions from case studies to masterclasses to conversations, anchored to the theme of collaboration, and featuring a stellar line-up including Academy Award winners and nominees, Golden Globe winners, and recipient of the coveted Palme d’Or.
Speakers and delegates alike embrace the spirit of the weekend...
“I went to my first Big Screen Symposium feeling nervous and rusty and left feeling inspired. At my second I spent 10 minutes chatting to someone who offered me a job 6 months later. At my third I was able to talk directly to people making a funding decision on one of my projects. I can’t wait for the next one.” - Mark Prebble, Delegate
“I loved hearing more about the NZ industry and meeting some of the very talented filmmakers as well. I was also impressed at the wide interest groups involved with the Symposium - it was really refreshing to attend a conference that is not solely producer- orientated.” - Liz Watts, Producer (AUS), Speaker 2015
“I came away with a greater sense of confidence in what I do, and a sense of pride in the high quality of NZ films.” Survey respondent, 2016
