Channeled + The Waterways — Live at Off Broadway Theatre, Papakura
Two generations of New Zealand rock come together for one unforgettable night when Channeled and The Waterways share the stage at Off Broadway Theatre this November.
Channeled, led by Auckland songwriter and musician Ben Ruegg, have carved out a reputation for heartfelt alternative rock built on strong songwriting and emotional honesty. Completing the band are Matt Garratt on guitar, Branden Pritchard on drums, and Michelle Anderton on bass, whose interplay and attention to dynamics create a tight, compelling live sound. Their performances are marked by precision, passion, and a genuine connection with the audience. As one reviewer noted, “Channeled’s strength lies in their maturity and understanding of songwriting. Led by Ben Ruegg, their music shows a real command of dynamics, groove, and space — every part serves the song. With thoughtful arrangements and seamless transitions, Channeled deliver performances that are both tight and emotionally engaging.”
This will be a special Channeled performance, featuring guest appearances from Jenni Smith, Natalie Ruegg, and Scott McDowall, joining the band for select songs. Ben has also invited Andrea Rabin to perform on piano and keyboards, adding a fresh dimension to the band’s live sound. This expanded lineup will make for a memorable and unique set, showcasing the collaborative spirit at the heart of Channeled’s music.
Joining them are The Waterways, an anchor in the Hibiscus Coast music scene. Fronted by the legendary John Kempt, whose career spans both the New Zealand and U.S. music worlds, The Waterways deliver a world-class blend of classic and contemporary rock. Kempt first made waves in the 1980s with the innovative band The Scissormen before starring as Buddy Holly in the multimillion-dollar musical The Buddy Holly Story.
Now backed by virtuoso drummer Daniel Waterson and bassist Freddie Flowers — organiser of the beloved Fabfest music festival — The Waterways are crafting their upcoming album Life on the Waterways and earning acclaim for their electrifying live performances.
As New Zealand Musician Magazine puts it, “John Kempt is a songwriter, guitarist, and frontman of considerable skill, boundless enthusiasm, and irrepressible voice.” Expect nothing less than that on stage this November.
This is an all-ages, alcohol-free event, making it a welcoming night out for everyone. There will be band merch available to buy and order, along with snacks, cookies, and local art for sale from community vendors.
With two powerhouse acts performing together for one special night, this is a showcase of experience, passion, and New Zealand rock at its finest.
